Keystone
Home Of Mount Rushmore
Fewer than 400 people call Keystone home year-round, but the population explodes in summer when crowds flock to nearby Mount Rushmore. Originally established as a mining town in 1883, the town now serves as a vacation spot for visitors to the Black Hills. The town presents itself as a relic of the Old West, although its log buildings have more recent origins. Some remnants of the town's frontier heritage still exist, such as a gold mine and a locomotive, and you'll find modern diversions, including miniature golf courses and museums, mixed in. Above all, though, Keystone serves as a base for seeing the area's monuments, hills-meet-prairie landscape, and wildlife. Take a peek at our international travel planner: Keystone and its charms laid bare and easily scheduled.

Where to stay in Keystone

As a resort town, Keystone has far more guest beds than residents, and you have your choice of lodging type. Stay right in town in simple, clean hotels and motels, or opt for lodges, cabins, and bed and breakfasts that take advantage of the natural beauty of the Black Hills surrounding Keystone. You'll find a few campgrounds and RV parks in the area. A handful of restaurants reside inside the town, so choose accommodation in Keystone if you want easy access to a wider array of dining options.
