Ogunquit

4.5
Historic Walking Areas · Beaches · Geologic Formations
Ogunquit means "beautiful place by the sea" in the language of the Native Americans who inhabited the region long ago, and this remains an accurate description of this holiday destination today. The coastal town's population swells in summer when visitors arrive from around New England and farther afield to visit the long sandy beaches, dine on fresh lobster, shop for jewelry and crafts created by local artists, and ride the trolley through town. The summer crowd features a diverse mix of travelers, with Ogunquit remaining a popular choice for families, couples, and gay and lesbian visitors. The fun here continues after the sun goes down as the bars fill up and patrons take their seats in the renowned local playhouse. Where to stay in Ogunquit

Main Street holds the heart of the action in Ogunquit, and most of the town's inns, bed and breakfasts, and hotels sit on this street or close to it. A handful of establishments line Beach Street, which provides access to the town's highly regarded stretch of sand. You'll find additional bed and breakfasts as well as numerous vacation rentals in the form of houses, condominiums, and cottages in the area between Main Street and Israel Head Road on the coast. This area takes you away from the bustle of the center of town but still provides convenient access to Ogunquit Beach to the north and Perkins Cove--a small marina featuring a few restaurants and lobster shacks--to the south.
