Williamsburg
Colonial Capital
Founded in 1632 as a fortified settlement on the high ground between two rivers, Williamsburg served as a colonial capital of Virginia for over 80 years. Today, the city's tourism-based economy remains centered on the 120 hectare (300 acre) historical district, the country's largest open-air museum, containing hundreds of restored and reconstructed buildings from the colonial period. The city is home to the College of William and Mary, the second-oldest institution of higher education in the country, which taught three American presidents and many other key figures in the nation's early history. Williamsburg also contains many modern tourist attractions, including two major theme parks. Customize your holiday with our United States trip planner to create an adventure that suits you.

Where to stay in Williamsburg

Williamsburg offers lodgings for every taste, including four-star resorts, quaint inns, and budget-friendly hotels. Accommodations in the city's historical district provide easy access to all of the area's major attractions, but they also charge much higher prices than equally comfortable guesthouses in some of the outlying neighborhoods. For a genuine Virginian experience, consider pitching a tent or renting a cottage in one of the area's popular campgrounds, which offer shuttle services to the city's major attractions and provide free Wi-Fi, cable TV, and fenced-in areas for pets.
