Carcassonne, France — 2 nights

Medieval Heart of France

Best known as a fortified town, Carcassonne is a walled city that provided the inspiration for the castle in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" and the location for many scenes in Kevin Costner's movie "Robin Hood." For a daily dose of excitement, medieval jousting tournaments are held twice per day between the two walls--while this may sound like a typical touristy show, it's actually an entertaining display of combative competition and horsemanship.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Cité de Carcassonne and Mirepoix Cathedral. Step off the beaten path and head to Chateau de Peyrepertuse and Chateau de Queribus. Get out of town with these interesting Carcassonne side-trips: Rennes le chateau (in Rennes-le-Chateau), Jardin aux Plantes Parfumees la Bouichere (in Limoux) and Abbaye d'Alet les Bains (in Alet les Bains). There's much more to do: Head underground at Grotte de Niaux, snap pictures at Pont Romain, get answers to all your questions at Office de tourisme des Pyrenees Cathares, and step into the grandiose world of Chateau de Puivert.
