Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.Step off the beaten path and head to Abbey of St. Paul Outside the Walls and Cupola di San Pietro. There's much more to do: appreciate the history behind La Pieta, get engrossed in the history at Le Domus Romane di Palazzo Valentini, ponder the design of Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, and stop by Castroni.
