Bend — 2 nights

An old logging town at the crux of the high desert and ponderosa pine forest, Bend melds a love of the outdoors with cosmopolitan flair.

Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Mon) early enough to drive to Newport.

Newport — 2 nights

A town that survives on the sea, Newport's population of just over 10,000 supports a healthy commercial fishing industry.
On the 4th (Tue), identify plant and animal life at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, visit a coastal fixture at Yaquina Head Lighthouse, then enjoy the sand and surf at Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area, and finally take in the waterfront at Newport's Historic Bayfront. Here are some ideas for day two: cruise along Cape Perpetua Visitor Center - Siuslaw National Forest, take in the dramatic natural features at Devil's Churn, and then take a leisurely stroll along Yachats coastline.

You can drive from Bend to Newport in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or take a bus. Traveling from Bend in April, expect a bit warmer with lows of 42°F in Newport. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Wed) so you can drive to Astoria.

Spirit of the Columbia

Astoria, named for famed fur trader John Jacob Astor, resides near the mouth of the Columbia River.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Fort Clatsop National Memorial and Ecola State Park. Visiting Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock will get you outdoors. Olympic National Park — 3 nights

In Olympic National Park, ancient rainforests and ocean tidal pools at lower elevations contrast with wildflower-filled alpine meadows and snowcapped peaks.
Step off the beaten path and head to Hurricane Ridge and Rialto Beach. Step out of the city life by going to Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center and Ruby Beach.
