Yeats County
County Sligo draws visitors with stunning nature, distinct culture, and literary importance. In the northwest of Ireland, the county lies close to the border with Northern Ireland. This vantage point gives it a closer connection to the relations and tensions between the original Republic and the newly partitioned Northern Ireland. Despite cold temperatures, visitors come for surfing and other water activities such as stand-up paddling. The county's literary legacy begins with famous manuscripts written in medieval times, such as "Book of Ballymote," and "Annals of the Four Masters," among others. The legacy continues into the 20th century with poet Willliam Butler Yeats, whose poems were inspired by the landscape of northern Sligo.
