Papeete — 1 day

The capital of French Polynesia, Pape'ete amounts to little more than a medium-sized town by Western standards, but it is still a thriving hub of culture and commerce.
Start off your visit on the 5th (Fri): stop by Fluid Tahiti, then take an in-depth tour of Museum of Tahiti and the Islands, then see the interesting displays at Musee de la perle et Bijouterie, and finally browse the eclectic array of goods at Municipal Market.

To see where to stay and other tourist information, you can read our Papeete trip planner.

If you are flying in from New Zealand, the closest major aiport is Faa'a International Airport. In June, daily temperatures in Papeete can reach 34°C, while at night they dip to 26°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 5th (Fri) early enough to catch the flight to Rurutu.

Tahiti travel guide

4.1
Gift & Specialty Shops · Flea Markets · Safaris
The largest and probably best-known of the French Polynesian islands, Tahiti remains synonymous with turquoise coral lagoons, lush tropical vegetation, and palm-fringed beaches of black, volcanic sand. Tall, green mountains rise out of the blue ocean, lined with deep valleys, foaming waterfalls, and tumbling streams. Settlements skirt the island, including French Polynesia's small but vibrant capital Pape'ete, where colorful architecture, a bustling market, and smiling locals generate a great deal of charm. Top things to do here include exploring the island's rugged interior, as well as experiencing the traditional culture through archeological sites and hip-shaking music and dance.
