More than 20 million people call Cairo their home and, as soon as you set foot in the sprawling metropolis, it's evident they make it crowded and chaotic, but also exuberant and charming.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to Cairo is an approximately 6.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. You'll gain 1 hour traveling from Riyadh to Cairo due to the time zone difference. Prepare for little chillier weather when traveling from Riyadh in May: high temperatures in Cairo hover around 38°C and lows are around 24°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 9th (Tue) so you can fly to Hurghada.

You can fly from Cairo to Hurghada in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Cairo in May, plan for somewhat warmer nights in Hurghada, with lows around 28°C. On the 12th (Fri), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can drive to Luxor.

A monumental number of archaeological relics from ancient Egypt remain evident in Luxor, the former capital of the New Kingdom.

Spend the 14th (Sun) floating through the air with a balloon tour. Traveling by car from Hurghada to Luxor takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. While traveling from Hurghada, expect a bit warmer days and about the same nights in Luxor, ranging from highs of 45°C to lows of 26°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 15th (Mon) early enough to drive to Aswan.

You can drive from Luxor to Aswan in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train. In May in Aswan, expect temperatures between 47°C during the day and 29°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Tue) to allow enough time to fly to Abu Simbel.

You can do a combination of flight and bus from Abu Simbel to Alexandria in 8.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. Expect cooler weather when traveling from Abu Simbel in May: highs in Alexandria hover around 32°C, while lows dip to 21°C. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 19th (Fri) to allow enough time to drive to El Alamein.

Traveling by car from Alexandria to El Alamein takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train. Expect a daytime high around 32°C in May, and nighttime lows around 20°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 20th (Sat) so you can go by car to Siwa.

Start off your visit on the 21st (Sun): examine the collection at The Traditional Siwa House and then steep yourself in history at Shali Fortress.
