Step out of Leon with an excursion to Juan Venado Island Nature Reserve in Las Penitas--about 34 minutes away. There's lots more to do: contemplate the geological forces at Cerro Negro Volcano, examine the collection at Museo de la Revolucion, push the limits with an extreme tour, and pause for some serene contemplation at Iglesia San Juan Bautista de Subtiava.

You can drive from Managua to Leon in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In April in Leon, expect temperatures between 41°C during the day and 29°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Wed) early enough to take a bus to Isla de Ometepe.
