You can drive from San Juan del Sur to San Rafael del Sur in 2.5 hours. Another option is to take a bus. You'll set off for Leon on the 7th (Mon).

A cultured and storied city, Leon attracts guests from all over the world, drawn to the second city's style, thriving intellectual life, and liveliness.

You'll get in some beach time at Playa Las Penitas and Playa Poneloya. Get outdoors at Cerro Negro Volcano and Adrenaline & Extreme Tours. Step out of Leon to go to Las Penitas and see Juan Venado Island Nature Reserve, which is approximately 38 minutes away. The adventure continues: pause for some serene contemplation at Cathedral-Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, see the interesting displays at Museo de Arte Fundacion Ortiz-Gurdian, steep yourself in history at Ruins of Leon Viejo, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Calvary Church - Sweet Name of Jesus.

Getting from San Rafael del Sur to Leon by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 39°C in January, and nighttime lows around 25°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 11th (Fri) so you can go by car to Esteli.

Sitting up in the north central highlands, Esteli enjoys a fairly mild climate throughout the year.

Visiting Reserva Natural Miraflor and National Reserve Tisey Estanzuela will get you outdoors. Take a break from Esteli with a short trip to Cerro De La Cruz in Jinotega, about 1h 40 min away. Traveling by car from Leon to Esteli takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. Plan for a bit cooler temperatures traveling from Leon in January, with highs in Esteli at 27°C and lows at 20°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
