Newport — 4 nights

City by the Sea

With coastline on the west, south, and east, Newport is a maritime city with a rich history.
Explore Newport's surroundings by going to Colt State Park (in Bristol) and Providence (Lippitt House Museum, Room Escape Games, &more). There's still lots to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of Cliff Walk, enjoy the sea views from Beavertail Lighthouse and Park, admire the striking features of Newport Mansions, and cruise along Bellevue Avenue Historic District.

For photos, traveler tips, ratings, and other tourist information, refer to the Newport trip itinerary planner.

Newark to Newport is an approximately 3-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of train and bus. When traveling from Newark in March, plan for a bit cooler days in Newport, with highs around 43°F, while nights are about the same with lows around 29°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 17th (Fri) to allow enough time to fly back home.

The Ocean State
Despite being the country's smallest state, Rhode Island includes over 640 km (400 mi) of coastline, courtesy of Narragansett Bay and more than 30 islands. Most of the state is part of the U.S. mainland, despite its somewhat misleading name. Though it takes only about 40 minutes to drive across this tiny state, Rhode Island includes more white sandy beaches than most visitors can hope to explore on a single trip. The state's one big city and surrounding small towns brim with places to visit, such as museums, galleries, restaurants, bars, and historical neighborhoods packed with colonial-era buildings. Although the state may seem small, your holiday itinerary is sure to be chock-full.
