Eschew the tourist crowds and head to National Museum of African American History and Culture and National Portrait Gallery. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Washington National Cathedral. Venture out of the city with trips to Gari Melchers Home and Studio (in Falmouth), Spotsylvania (Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center & Harris Farm Battlefield) and Weems-Botts Museum (in Dumfries). Spend the 28th (Wed) exploring nature at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. There's still lots to do: examine the collection at National Postal Museum, witness the site of a historic battle at Antietam National Battlefield, steep yourself in history at Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park, and take a stroll through Georgetown.
