Grand Rapids — 4 nights

Furniture City

The second largest city in Michigan and a hub of furniture manufacturing, Grand Rapids bears the nickname "Furniture City." However, the destination's original name came from the rapids of the Grand River that once ran through the downtown area.
Bring the kids along to Room Escape Games and Grand Rapids Public Museum. Venture out of the city with trips to Gilmore Car Museum (in Hickory Corners), Holland (Saugatuck Dunes State Park, Holland State Park Beach, &more) and Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (in Kalamazoo). There's much more to do: admire the natural beauty at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, examine the collection at Air Zoo, contemplate the long history of Meyer May House, and get to know the resident critters at John Ball Zoo.

For other places to visit, photos, more things to do, and other tourist information, read our Grand Rapids trip planner.

Ames to Grand Rapids is an approximately 7-hour combination of car and flight. You can also drive. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 1 hour traveling from Ames to Grand Rapids. In April in Grand Rapids, expect temperatures between 56°F during the day and 36°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 13th (Thu) to allow time to travel back home.
