Sligo — 3 nights

Despite its small size, Sligo serves as a major center of culture, commerce, and entertainment in the northwestern section of Ireland.
Roscommon Castle and Yeats's Grave will appeal to history buffs. Take a break from Sligo with a short trip to Rathcroghan Royal Site & Visitor Centre in Tulsk, about 54 minutes away. There's lots more to do: relax and rejuvenate at Voya Seaweed Baths, take a memorable drive along The Lough Gill Drive, take in the dramatic scenery at Glencar Waterfall, and steep yourself in history at Sligo Abbey.

Take the guesswork out of planning a Sligo vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

Newark, USA to Sligo is an approximately 14-hour combination of flight and car. You'll lose 5 hours traveling from Newark to Sligo due to the time zone difference. Plan for somewhat warmer nights when traveling from Newark in January since evenings lows in Sligo dip to 40°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Sat) early enough to go by car to Cong.

Western Ireland travel guide

Western Ireland overflows with quaint coastal towns, historical castles, and picturesque rocky landscapes. With big cities like Galway, Cork, and Limerick, the region has the right amount of urban flavor to balance Ireland's rugged west coast. Carpeted green fields end abruptly at the Cliffs of Moher, which draw visitors as a top tourist attraction in the region. The area's Aran Islands, a collection of three small islands, showcase the original language through many native Irish speakers.
