Vilnius — 3 nights

Jerusalem of Lithuania

The capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, boasts an impressive medieval quarter--one of the continent's largest and a World Heritage Site with almost 2,000 historical buildings.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Vilniaus staciatikiu Sventosios Dvasios vienuolynas and Bernardine Church (Bernardinu Baznycia). You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania and Ponary cmentarz. Step out of Vilnius with an excursion to Kernave Mounds in Kernave--about 44 minutes away. There's lots more to do: enjoy unforgettable views with a balloon tour, stroll around Vingis Park, see the interesting displays at KGB Museum (Genocido Auku Muziejus), and take in the architecture and atmosphere at St. Anne's Church.

To see more things to do, ratings, where to stay, and more tourist information, refer to the Vilnius journey planner.

Cairo, Egypt to Vilnius is an approximately 9-hour flight. You can also drive. Plan for colder temperatures traveling from Cairo in October, with highs in Vilnius at 11°C and lows at 3°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Wed) to allow time to drive to Kaunas.

Kaunas — 4 nights

Situated between the Neris and Nemunas rivers, Kaunas is known for its old town, which, though smaller than the capital's, is in much better condition.
Explore hidden gems such as Ninth Fort and Kaunas Town Hall. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Akropolis and Jaukus Namai. Get out of town with these interesting Kaunas side-trips: Vytauto Kalnas (in Birstonas) and Panemunes Castle (in Pilis). And it doesn't end there: learn about all things military at Atomic KGB Bunker, pause for some serene contemplation at St. Gertrude's Church (Gertrudos baznycia), step into the grandiose world of Kaunas Castle, and browse the exhibits of Raudondvaris Dvaras.

To see maps, more things to do, traveler tips, and other tourist information, read our Kaunas day trip planning site.

Lithuania travel guide

4.4
Characterized by the majestic Baltic coastline and adjacent white sands, Lithuania boasts lush green forests, hidden lakes, and coastal wetlands. A nation with a turbulent history, Lithuania houses the remains of a former nuclear site and the remnants of defenses used to strengthen the frontier of the Tsarist empire. At the same time, it pays homage to its national heroes, honored in sculpture parks and museums throughout the country. Today, Lithuania boasts a thriving musical, cultural, and visual arts scene, hosting a range of festivals and concerts year-round.
