The capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, boasts an impressive medieval quarter--one of the continent's largest and a World Heritage Site with almost 2,000 historical buildings.

Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Vilniaus staciatikiu Sventosios Dvasios vienuolynas and St. Michael's Church (Sv. Mykolo Baznycia). You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Money Museum of the Bank of Lithuania and Ponary cmentarz. Step out of Vilnius with an excursion to Kernave Mounds in Kernave--about 44 minutes away. There's much more to do: soar above the sights with a balloon tour, walk around Vingis Park, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Orthodox Cathedral, and take in the awesome beauty at Hill of Three Crosses.

Cairo, Egypt to Vilnius is an approximately 9-hour flight. You can also drive. Plan for much colder temperatures traveling from Cairo in October, with highs in Vilnius at 11°C and lows at 3°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Wed) early enough to drive to Kaunas.

Situated between the Neris and Nemunas rivers, Kaunas is known for its old town, which, though smaller than the capital's, is in much better condition.

Explore hidden gems such as Ninth Fort and Atomic KGB Bunker. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Akropolis and Museum of Illusions Kaunas. Get out of town with these interesting Kaunas side-trips: Vytauto Kalnas (in Birstonas) and Panemunes Castle (in Pilis). And it doesn't end there: contemplate the long history of Kaunas Town Hall, pause for some serene contemplation at St. Gertrude's Church (Gertrudos baznycia), step into the grandiose world of Kaunas Castle, and browse the exhibits of Raudondvaris Dvaras.

Getting from Vilnius to Kaunas by car takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: take a train; or take a bus. In November, daytime highs in Kaunas are 5°C, while nighttime lows are 1°C. On the 7th (Mon), you'll travel back home.
